My name is J.J., which is what everyone has always called me. I was born on July 17, 1984 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. When I was five years old my family moved to the suburb city of Coquitlam, BC where I live to this day.
I’ve been drawing cartoons every since I was a small child. I only really became interested in political cartooning in my final years of highschool; I was heavily inspired by the work of the brilliant San Francisco cartoonist Don Asmussen. I originally started Filibuster as a project in my grade 12 marketing class; we were learning how to make self-promotional websites.
Ideologically I guess I am basically conservative, though I like to think of myself more as a political eccentric. Cartoonists are more interesting when they’re not rigid partisans. I am very interested in foreign affairs, you’ll probably notice a lot of that reflected in my cartoons. I also care very deeply about the future of Canadian-American relations. People often praise me for not being anti-American, because that seems to be an all-too-common characteristic among Canadians satirists. I honestly believe that institutionalized Canadian anti-Americanism is the root cause of most problems with this country.
Along with being pro-American, I see myself as being strongly anti-elite and anti-tradition. This is why I get so passionate about topics like the British monarchy, as any of my friends can confirm.
My cartoons have been published in a few publications over the years. My biggest client was the now-defunct Western Standard, which at one time was a conservative politics magazine out of Alberta. Today I’m run in the Tri-City News, a local community newspaper that serves the cities of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and Port Moody. Some of my work from this site has also been published in two books, which you can see in the “Store” section.
I hold a degree in political science from Simon Fraser University, where I also worked as opinions editor of the campus newspaper for a while. Most of this site was produced when I was a university student. In 2009 I spent a year living in Japan, teaching English. It was an awful experience.
Along with politics and cartoons, I love video games, candy, musical theater, and traveling to foreign places.
