I wrote this while vacationing Holland. It’s a sort of broad general thesis on Canadian culture, and why Canadians don’t really understand what “culture” truly is.

Michaelle Jean now enjoys a fairly favorable reputation, but at the time of her appointment her controversial biography caused a lot of national soul-searching regarding what sort of person makes a good national figurehead. I argued that the best figurehead was no figurehead at all.
Electoral Reform misses the point, March 1, 2005
I am quite fond of this article, and I think it stands up quite well today. British Columbia was being asked to vote in a referendum on changing the province’s electoral system, which I opposed. I later re-ran this article when the same question was put to referendum a second time in 2009. The referendum failed both times, by the way.
