There’s no escaping it: a distressing amount of Republican voters continue to believe, despite all availabe evidence to the contrary, that President Obama was somehow born in Kenya, and is thus constitutionally ineligible to serve in the very office he has occupied for the last two years. Though I’m skeptical of sensationalistic stories like this one, which use the weaselly category of “likely voters” to exaggerate the strength of “birthers” in the GOP base, any significant bloc of Republican supporters so firmly in denial of evidence-based standards of reality should be deeply troubling to the leaders of that party.
But it doesn’t seem to be. On the contrary, some leading GOP presidential candidates actually seem to be going out of their way to court birther support, or at the very least issue denials-but-not-quite-denials of the conspiracy theory in such a way as to leave the door open to fair-minded birther “moderates,” if such a thing can be said to exist.
Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, went on a right-wing talk radio show this week and stated that the “only reason” he was not a birther himself was because he had faith that Hillary Clinton would have dug up some damning evidence during the primary. He then went on to qualify his statement by declaring that Obama grew up in Kenya (which he didn’t), was raised by his anti-colonialist Kenyan father and grandfather (which he wasn’t), and that this is where the President developed his radical anti-American worldview, or something. Though he’s later tried to backtrack from these statements, claiming a “slip of the tongue,” if you read the transcript in full, you can see that Huckabee was seriously, knowingly trying to peddle very detailed misinformation about the President’s supposed African background.
Newt Gingrich, who kinda-sorta launched his presidential campaign yesterday, has similarly gone on record stating that he believes Obama’s “Kenyan, anti-colonial worldview” is the root of his evil policies. Sarah Palin, for her part, has described the birth certificate question as a “fair” thing to ask, in clear language, though she later tried to do a dishonest, Huckabee-like backpedal, too.
There are a few issues at play here, as I see it.
One, as mentioned, is obviously just the awkward strategic politics involved in trying to be a Republican politician in this day and age, where a significant percentage of the base believes things about the President that are wildly untrue, yet remain highly motivated to run out and vote conservative because of them. In the era of the Tea Party, there are obviously very few points to be gained by any Republican candidate willing to stick up for Obama — no matter how absurd the charges. So, what results is a sort of amiable indifference to birtherism by the party establishment, a cowardly position most GOP candidates will probably be expected to embrace in order to win the votes of the party’s most hard-right wing.
But there’s another motivating factor, too, a phenomenon I’d describe as “stupid people trying to make smart arguments.”
Psychoanalyzing politicians is a useful way to understand their motives. It’s why political biographies are so fascinating to read, and why exploring a candidate’s personal background is a perfectly legitimate way to attempt to anticipate how he will govern. However, it’s also a very delicate and sophisticated art that requires a great deal of thoughtfulness, compassion, and understanding. You can’t form an accurate psychological profile of a politician just by cobbling together a few rumours, partisan talking-points, and conspiracy theories. People are complicated, and analyzing someone’s life story takes serious effort if you are seeking to draw a meaningful conclusion.
Dinesh D’Souza is a reasonable conservative intellectual who has written a variety of reasonable books on right-wing philosophy. He’s now earned a reputation as the sort of “thinking man’s birther” for his most recent work, The Roots of Obama’s Rage, which seeks to deconstruct the President’s biography in a way that seriously questions how Obama’s worldview may have been shaped by his feelings towards his absentee African father, and his own, confused identity as a biracial American. I’ve personally read a very good book called America’s Half-Blood Prince that analyzed the President from a similar perspective, crafting a detailed portrait of Obama as an insecure and ambitious individual with complex feelings on race relations and white society, largely by unpacking the man’s own words in his famous autobiography.
It’s a fair case to make. Obama is a complicated fellow who has, in fact, spent a lot of time thinking about blackness, and Africa, and the Third World, and leftist politics, and capitalism, and white power structures, and all the rest of it. Likewise, in many ways, his multi-cultural, hyper-cosmopolitan, Hawaiian-Indonesian-Chicago background is, in fact, quite “strange,” or at least certainly very far removed from the experience of even the typical black American. It would be naive to think, as a result, that his personal ideology is no different from your average white Democratic politician who got his start on the city council of some middle class suburb.
Though it may be the stuff of excellent books, I’m not sure that this is an argument that has a place in the mainstream discourse, however. A lot of people simply don’t like reading books — excellent or otherwise — for starters, and as a result are only interested in regurgitating the half-understood, secondhand arguments of other, smarter people. When this happens, as I believe occurred with Governor Huckabee, what ensues is a lot of dopey people making sloppy, grossly simplified arguments that belittle the sophistication of the point the original thinker was trying to argue. Then the 24-hour news media, ever-eager to condense things even further, reduces the ignorant comment to an even more ignorant sound-byte, and by that point we’ve completely descended into childish name-calling, with no intellectual depth whatsoever.
There are many stages of stupidity needed to transform the arguments of a D’Souza into the sort of nonsense many Republican politicians (and man-in-the-street supporters) are spouting these days, but that seems to be the only level of discourse the American political culture appears lazy enough to handle.

This whole birther thing is something that I just cannot wrap my head around. I do not even know how it started. It seems like it came out of nowhere one day and just snowballed after that. The fact that this "movement" is going mainstream only gives a sense of legitimacy to it. It is all nonsense like all conspiracy theories are because they are not based on fact.
March 4th, 2011 at 9:12 PM
And it's impossible to win against birthers. They say there's no birth certificate, so you point them to the birth certificate, and they say no, that's not a good enough birth certificate. Then it turns out that it doesn't matter if he has a birth certificate, because his father was a foreign citizen and EVERYBODY KNOWS that you have to have two citizen parents in order to be a "natural born citizen." Then if they concede that his parents' citizenship didn't matter since he was born in Hawaii, they'll say that he ceased to be a citizen when he moved to Indonesia.
Then there all kinds of other random assertions that go along with birtherism, like that Barack Obama has used 19 social security numbers and that he's spent millions of dollars (depending on who says it, it's either his own money or public funds) to keep his real ancestry from coming out.
As soon as you cut off one head, they grow two more.

March 4th, 2011 at 9:58 PM
I think the most amusing part of this was during the election, when you had John McCain who WAS born outside of the US, and as I understand it was made a natural citizen retroactively.
March 4th, 2011 at 10:47 PM
I'm thinking back to the 2008 election, when McCain encountered the "he's an Arab" lady at a rally ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrnRU3ocIH4 , the quote comes about 52 seconds in). He did an admirable job of defending Obama from the crazies, saying that he's a "decent family man, citizen, who I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues" (my respect for him rose immensely that day. Still wouldn't have voted for him were I an American, but he was an incredible class act in my book for that incident) but I wonder sometimes what Palin (his running mate, as you know) or Huckabee, or any other Tea Partier would have said to that lady. "Do I set the record straight and lose votes, or do I tell a lie to get votes?"
I'm also convinced that within my lifetime the Tea Partiers will formally break off from the Republican party (or vice versa) and either form a third party, or join the Libertarians (who are closer to them in ideology as far as my limited understanding goes), if anything is to get a viable third party in American politics after how many decades of the two party system, the Tea Partiers would do it. And, like what happened in here in Canada, initially they wouldn't care that they are splitting the right vote, letting the Democrats waltz into power easily, they'd be more concerned about getting their message out.
March 4th, 2011 at 11:01 PM
There were some good points, but the article is wrong to imply that it's only the liberal media that is bringing this issue up. In the Huckabee case above, it was a right-wing radio host who wanted to talk about the President's birth certificate, and Huckabee happily played along.
March 5th, 2011 at 12:32 AM
I think it's a bit much to claim Palin has shown any sympathy for birtherism. When she was asked about it in that interview, she:
1) Immediately compared it to the birther-esque rumours about her own son.
2) Said that she had never questioned Obama's eligibility to be President.
3) In a follow-up Facebook post, called the birther claims "stupid." (Yes, that's the exact quote.)
To believe that her comments are an endorsement of birtherism, you would also have to believe that she has doubts about her own son's parentage.
Personally, I enjoyed Ann Coulter's stated reason for not being a birther: "If Obama was an immigrant to America, he'd like it more." :)

And here I thought anti-colonialism was considered a pretty mainstream position in the 2000's.
March 5th, 2011 at 8:25 AM
This shows birtherism on both sides.
John McCain was born in on a military base to American citizens in a territory which was legally considered the United States. Anyone born in the Canal Territory prior to the US relinquishing it to Panama is considered a Natural Born Citizen, just as anyone born today in Pueto Rico or Guam is. Anyone born on a military base is considered a Natural Born citizen for the same reason. Anyone born to two American citizens ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD is considered a natural born citizen.
March 5th, 2011 at 8:29 AM
Yeah, I agree Huckabee shouldn't have accepted the invitation to play in the mud with the pigs, but he did come out on the side that Obama was a citizen. In the end, his crime was that he didn't realize Obama grew up in Indonesia rather than Kenya.
March 5th, 2011 at 8:43 AM
Yes, that is true of all conspiracy theories. From the 9/11 hoax, to the faked Moon landings, the JFK assassination, etc. The best analogy I ever heard is a game of Whack-A-Mole. The best one can hope for when arguing with one of these people is to hope that unconverted souls will learn the truth instead of believing nonsense.
March 5th, 2011 at 9:11 AM
I don't think that anyone like Dinesh D’Souza can be called reasonable when they so often argue that morality cannot exist without divine authority and that evolution is an atheist plot…
He's also been known to blame the attacks of 9/11 on the liberal media, and the abuses at Abu Ghraib on liberal sexual immodesty.
I think what we have here is just a very intelligent, and very well educated man, who nevertheless holds some very stupid ideas.
March 5th, 2011 at 1:51 PM
As a matter of technicality, I don't think it's as clear as you describe. USC 1403 (http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/8/1403.html) was passed in 1937, piror to 1937, people born on military bases were NOT considered natural born citizens. John McCain was born in 1936, thus when he was born he was not a natural born citizen.
I bring it up mostly for irony's sake more than anything. I'm not a leftist birther, and I think the entire natural born citizen clause is dumb anyway.

Great Blog J.J – here's my take on the collateral issues – (apology to all readers – it's delivered in the form of run-on sentences.)
There seems to be a pervasive policy adhered to by Candidates to pander to any voter audience's prejudices. This is not new, it's called Politics if it come from your team and propaganda if it comes from the other team. What appears to be new, to me, about the outright outlandish lies, is that they seems to be so instantaneously forgivable and forgotten. The absolution and then amnesia is just ever only one juicy news cycle away.
Currently I'd expect a politician to tell a White audience, Obama's All black and then to turn and the very next Black audience and say that Obama's really all white. If only politics were so Black and White, it seems all truth and lies are the same shade of grey. Its as if this grey cloud of partisan campaigning, is really just a Fog Of War, and in every war we know "the first casualty is the truth" … or so "they" say.
Politicians everywhere are catering to lower standards of truth in a media market filled with info-tainment options, that come in all demographic fashions and from all wings, left right or buffalo and for every options there is a tailored truth or a dressed up lie. When PEOPLE demand truth with their votes, Politicians will listen and delivery us truth … and then promptly pander to their campaign contributers needs, because pre-election truth is not the same as post-election accountability.
Maybe it's time to pay for voting rights, straight to the politician, just like a lobbyists do. If they buy my vote, fine, but i'd pay for their accountably, because I know for certain this one truth; I've been paying over and over for their lack of Accountability and I don't absolve them of that and i'll never forget it.

Doesn't matter either way. His mother is American thus he is a natural born citizen even if he was born outside the US.
March 5th, 2011 at 9:45 PM
As SMS pointed out, even if it's proven 100% conclusively that because his mother is American, he is a natural born citizen, and they believe that, they'll still find something else to pick on. The only thing that will make them stop is Obama's removal from the presidency on the grounds of his not being eligible for the position. Nothing else.
March 5th, 2011 at 9:47 PM
Much of whats written here seems to assume that these categorically disproven ad hominem attacks against the integrity of Obama's character are essentially a bad conformity to a real ideological or philosophical premise. While this goes on to present serious introspective critique of modern conservative discourse it is also a fairly generous reading of it. We shouldn't just have to accept that the people who are going to be running our country are allowed to make incredulous errors of judgment.
Also, I'm not pretending to write something everyone doesn't already know. I'm not saying that politicians should be hung by their words, but if we can't agree certain intolerable themes should be able to excluded like inherent RACISM motivating the reaction against an ethnic president does not belong in our governance.

Actually, that part isn't so clear-cut. There was a loophole in nationality laws at the time that possibly meant that a child born overseas to a woman aged 19 wouldn't be a citizen at birth if the father was not also a citizen. (It was later corrected retroactively, though, as it was for John McCain's situation.)
It doesn't help that we actually don't have an exact definition of "natural born citizen." (I would argue that it means "citizen as a consequence of birth (rather than of naturalization)," which would include loophole babies like John McCain and a hypothetical baby born in Kenya to a Kenyan father and a 19 year old American woman.)
March 7th, 2011 at 1:50 AM
Sorry to bust your false equivalence, but most of what's in your post is false. The canal zone and US military bases are/were not considered to be a part of the United States, including for the purposes of determining citizenship. Only the US proper and organized territories are (the only US territory currently affected by the distinction is American Samoa, where most of the residents are US nationals but not US citizens). After the Insular Cases of the early 20th century, people born to US citizens in unincorporated territories were US nationals but not US citizens until the deficiency in the law was corrected retroactively in 1937. John McCain fell into that loophole. Is he a citizen? Yes. Is he a natural-born citizen? Yes. Was he a citizen of the United States from his birth until August 1937? Probably not.

I doubt it's really that many to be distressing. I'd even go out on a limb and say they're all tea baggers too. They tend to be a vocal minority…a very vocal minority because they're the type that has no shame in where, how, and when they get their message across. From screaming on radio to driving around in vehicles with banners and huge posters slapped all over it.
March 7th, 2011 at 11:15 PM
That's not a loophole, that's properly decided law.
March 9th, 2011 at 12:44 PM
I still say the "Tea Party" is the result of two things:
(1) A sudden popular discovery of trillion dollar plus deficits as far as the eye can see and
(2) The discovery by hitherto politically uninvolved people that there is an organization called the Federal Reserve that can control the money supply (with checks and balances from the government of course.)
The result is a massive group of politically unsophisticated people joining into the debate. This is never pretty to watch. The newbies to politics tend to like conspiracy theory and panic. In a way, all Obama did was speed this up. Unfunded mandates were going to leave a massive bill anyway, and the recession was going to leave a big hole no matter what.
Two solutions to the circus: (1) plug the da** hole in the budget or (2) somehow get a more educated and sophisticated Tea Party.

As I posted elsewhere, many of today's "birthers" actually wanted to repeal the "natural-born citizen" provision in the U.S. Constitution several years ago in order to run Austrian-born Arnold Schwartzenegger, former governor of California, on the Republican ticket for president.
You do know what happened the last time someone from Austria took over a foreign government? Yes, his name was Adolf Hitler!
