Attention diverted this week from unrest in the Mideast to unrest in the American Midwest. The great state of Wisconsin has become ground zero in the country’s most intense labor battle in decades, as government employees mobilize to defend their rights (and, just as importantly, benefits) from a hostile Republican governor.
As is the case in most states, Wisconsin’s government employees — a broad category of workers including teachers, cops, firefighters, civil servants, nurses, and others — are all unionized, and thus negotiate for raises and benefits not as individuals, but rather through their union bosses with high-level representatives of the state government, in a practice known as collective bargaining. Collective bargaining in turn begets collective agreements, enormously detailed, sprawling contracts between union and government that set out, in great minutia, everything from how often workers will be given pay hikes to whose funerals they can attend and still receive full pay. Once established, the terms of these agreements have all the force of law; the government cannot easily pull out or alter the terms of the contract except at pre-approved negotiation time (usually once every four or five years) or else face the legal consequences of breaching a binding contract.
In practice, collective agreements between governments and their employees tend to be extremely generous. Indeed, there’s not really much debate about it these days; unless you’re a CEO, or some other top-ranking corporate type, if you work in the private sector you will almost certainly take home a smaller paycheque, be protected by a worse health plan, be easier to fire, and work longer hours with fewer holidays, than someone doing roughly similar work for a state or federal employer.
The root causes of this phenomenon are not too obscure. If a private businessman gives his employees too many sick days and devotes too much of his budget to salaries, the efficiency of the business will suffer, and he may find it increasingly impossible to turn a profit. No such concerns in the public sector! Since tax dollars continue to flow in regardless how well or poorly managed government services are, there’s no real pressure for the state to provide the best performance for the smallest financial input. At worst, over-paying and over-perking government employees will merely drive the state into bankruptcy, but hey, that’s a problem for another day.
Likewise, while private sector strikes are damagingly only to the businesses they target (you, the consumer can always shop at some non-striking supermarket), public sector strikes have the capacity to significantly cripple vital state-provided services to which there is no non-government alternative — things like schools, DMVs, post offices, libraries, and garbage collection — and thus cause significant societal breakdown. From a political perspective, helping instigate strikes also tends to broadcast a strong message of mismanagement and incompetence that most politicos are understandably keen to avoid.
More sinisterly, government employee unions are also notoriously political, and can force dangerously symbiotic partisan alliances to ensure their employment contracts always remain as opulent and benefit-rich as possible. In America, this is very much the nature of the relationship between organized labor and the Democratic Party; the former funds the latter during election time, and in exchange, the Dems act as a vanguard of the status quo when it’s time to renegotiate sick days.
Predictably, the most heavily and well-protected union states in America are thus also the bluest. But now Wisconsin, once amongst the bluest of blue, has a Republican governor and Republican-majority legislature, and is moving swiftly to change the rules of the game.
In an effort to reduce the large percentage of his deficit-plagued state’s budget currently eaten up by government salaries and benefits, Governor Scott Walker is trying to push through a bill that will a) increase the government’s cut of worker salaries to pay for their health and pension pans, and, more controversially, b) limit the jurisdiction of future collective bargaining to wages only, and c) make union dues voluntary.
The Governor’s gamble is that once government employees lose their rights to collectively-established benefits, the benefits they negotiate as individuals will inevitably be smaller and more affordable. Likewise, if union dues become voluntary, the presumption is that more Wisconsinites will simply chose to opt-out, and elect to keep more of their salary in their own pocket, even if this means fewer legally uncompromisable benefits (which they may or may not even fully exploit, anyway).
In response to all this, Wisconsin’s public sector unions have predictably gone into full attack mode, staging massive protests in the state’s capital building in order to stand in solidarity against what they (fairly accurately) describe as heavy-handed union-busting. The Democratic members of the state assembly, in turn, have resorted to weird filibuster tactics to prevent the Governor’s bill from passing the legislature, literally fleeing the state in order to prevent parliamentary quorum from being reached.
Does all this drama move you? There was a time, not so very long ago, when the idea of a “union protest” would conjure up images of the soot-streaked working class, desperately pleading with old man Rockefeller for less explosive mine shafts, or some such. Now, however, in this era where the majority of unionized Americans work comfortable, white-collar jobs in taxpayer-funded office buildings, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to muster significant sympathy for their plight. Indeed, the Governor has done his best to ensure the union side looks as unsympathetic as possible, specifically excluding the state’s police and firefighters from his reforms; two groups who still exude a fairly strong working class sensibility in appearance and culture, if not necessarily wealth or lifestyle.
Rather than some epic episode of class warfare, I believe what’s going on in Wisconsin is something more akin to a civil war within the ranks of the educated elite. And the educated elite strikes me as a group of people whom it is not terribly unfair to ask some sacrifices of, in the wake of the country’s current economic woes.

Cops, firefighters, civil servants, nurses – the educated elites? Ok, but then again, you say "a civil war within the ranks of the educated elite." So actually, I am not really sure exactly who you are referring to? Probably just missing the obvious, but who exactly is this 'civil war' being fought between within Wisconsin society?

The right wing argument about unions has always confused me. Workers have the right of collective bargaining but if they ever try to exercise it by going on strike the union must be stamped down? Does it still count if you have freedom of speech so long as you never criticise the government?
These union workers aren't the educated elite. The elites are those at the top of the Republican or Conservative Parties, the executives in businesses. Union workers are not the elites, if they were they would not need collective bargaining.
The only government employees who could be considered elites (at least in the UK) are the top civil servants but they're not unionised. Teachers, firemen, nurses do hard jobs with long hours for low pay and far lower pay than they deserve yet are still being cut to shreds by George Osborne and this Wisconsin Governor. This is not only an opportunistic ideological attempt to break unions but to break our 'vital public services' in general. I agree that the educated elite should be willing to make sacrifices to pay for the crisis but the real educated elite is not the working union man but the corporate CEO, the executive and the banker and they should pay through their taxes. The 'elite' bankers caused the crisis and should pay for it. The ordinary person, the worker, the consumer should not be the ones to suffer in the loss of their rights to collective bargaining or the public services that they rely on to survive.
I agree that it's a sad situation that the majority of private sector workers do not have the benefits or freedoms of collective bargaining that government workers enjoy. But there is another side to the argument. The better treatment of union workers is not an argument against unions but an argument in favour of workers in the private sector to unionise so they can get the essential benefits and fair treatment afforded to their already unionised counterparts.
This deficit obsession on the right is not helpful anyway. Cutting public services means that the public has instead to pay for these services themselves meaning they have less spare capital to spend on consumer products further stagnating the economy. Britain is about to head back into recession (last quarter we had 0.6% negative growth) just because of the fear of cuts! And we will be finally driven back into recession when cuts finally begin to bite in April. Cutting deficits, cutting spending are contractionary economic policies which shrink economies, not grow them. if America heads down the same cutting path as Britain and Ireland it will end up where the UK is now in the perfect economic storm with high and rising unemployment, high and rising inflation and a shrinking GDP, though what can we expect when we have a Chancellor of the Exchequer who doesn't even have a GCSE in Economics?
By fighting cuts union workers in Britain and America are working to protect the freedoms as well as economic prosperity of all the citizens of these countries by trying to steer the world off a dangerous economic path that will only perpetuate the crisis as the rich elites get richer.
So instead of scorn let us off the Wisconsin workers solidarity and I urge all UK readers to join the TUC march against cuts on March 26th

Having been layed-off 3 times in the last 2 years and having yet to reach the same pay I was making in retail despite having gone back to school to start a career, it's nearly imposable for me to have any sympathy for what's going on in Wisconsin. These people are far better off then most American's no matter how this goes down. It's almost like watching a baseball strike, except the Wisconsin government employees seem to genuinely believe that they're just common people being oppressed. They're not just common people, and their "oppression" is to be put in the same situation the rest of us have to deal with.
So, screw 'em and screw "solidarity". They can have my sympathy when the whole lot of 'em get layed-off.
February 26th, 2011 at 6:19 pm
I was under the impression that the unions had actually agreed to everything except the reduction in collective bargaining rights.
February 26th, 2011 at 6:19 pm
It's worth noting a few things about this you seem to have left out…
- Wisconsin's economic situation was fine when the Governor came into office. They had a $120+ million surplus thanks to the former administrations, which was promptly frittered away in a $140+ million series of tax breaks for businesses the moment he stepped into office. He plans to do another set of them after this is all done. This is not how you balance the budget, but it IS how you create a crisis to push an agenda.
- The unions have been more than willing to compromise on this. All of the unions, across the board, have stated they are more than willing to take the cuts due to the economic situation if they are allowed to keep their collective bargaining rights. It is Walker who is refusing to come to the table, insisting on his Union busting measures. Hence the protests and the reason 14 Democratic senate members are now hiding in exile outside the state.
- Walker has made some rather disturbing comments during this ordeal, some of which have hinted that he'd be willing to at least consider illegal measures to end the protests and bring the senate members back. All this has done is cause the Police to launch an investigation into his workings, as well as push the Police to side with the protesters, despite being exempted from the bill. They have since refused to break up the protest and have instead joined it.
- This isn't just one man trying to break up unions. The Republican party brought up similar measures in 3 other states within days of Wisconsin's attempt, all of which have had the removal of collective bargaining as a cornerstone of the measures. They haven't been as publicized but there are currently ongoing protests in these states as well.
So actually, the whole situation is a lot more complex than you've indicated.
February 26th, 2011 at 6:33 pm
Ya, screw those police officers and firefighters; as if they know what the common people have to deal with. And ahh, just so we're on the same page, what defines a "common person" again?
February 26th, 2011 at 6:45 pm
When was the last time you've heard of a city laying off a whole police office or fire department because they had gone bankrupt, or because they wanted to take things in a new direction? Unemployment is still near 10%, many people are barley holding on to jobs and business are still going bankrupt left and right… and theses guys are all up in arms that it might be harder for them to negotiate benefits.

They're all in a bubble safely protected from economic shitstorm the rest of us have to deal with.

Actually Michigan has shut down some State Trooper posts along with some city police forces so the county sheriff can take over duties instead.
They're no more protected from budget cuts or closings than you are.
February 26th, 2011 at 7:05 pm
Actually, a district in Providence, Rhode Island just fired all 1,900+ of it's teachers. No bargaining, no threats, it just up and fired them all. No one is safe during this economy, not even the unions.

Michigan I'll sympathize with, then. And, if Wisconsin were protesting that sort of thing, I'd sympathize with them too. But, they're not… They're not protesting over lay-offs or even the pay cuts which I could understand. They're protesting over losing the sort of bargaining tools that few Americans have access to anyway.
February 26th, 2011 at 7:11 pm
Try a $10 million surplus for FY 2011. The state of WI budgets on two-year cycles, so the 2009-2011 budget ends this year in June. That means this hoo-ha is about the 2011-2013 budget, which looks much, much more dire, to the tune of a $1.6-2.5 billion hole depending on how things shake out. What's the difference? The gigantic federal stimulus of '09 mostly went to states to close off gaps in public funding there. WI got $2.2 billion against total tax revenue of about $12 billion. Unless Washington passes more stimulus bills every year forever, we've got to make that shortfall up somehow. There's a major crisis brewing, and Gov. Walker did nothing to create it.
We're right next to Illinois, which has a pension fund that's about 54% under-funded, just passed a 75% tax hike, and can't pay its suppliers. We cut costs and clean up our act or we're next over the falls.
February 26th, 2011 at 7:15 pm
Or, if you read the whole article you would see that the city needed to send out notices months in advance if there was any chance at all of teachers being fired. They don't actually know how many, or even if any teachers will actually be fired yet.
But, I do concede that some states are actually going that far.
February 26th, 2011 at 7:26 pm
When did it become true that those in the public sector makes more than those in industry?
While it's widely acknowledged that they have an advantage in terms of benefits, when it comes down to cold, hard cash I make way more than any of my friends who work for the government doing similar jobs.
February 26th, 2011 at 8:03 pm
Dan, everyone is being affected by the economic problems. No city is going to lay off its entire police and fire staff, but there are massive cuts going on everyone, including in a city 10 minutes from where I live.
Lay-offs are happening to everyone, both union and non-union. The proper response isn't to hope that everyone is dragged down to the unfortunate situation you're in, but to hope that we can all rise up together in the face of a difficult situation.
Unions allow people to bargain about issues with an employer that is almost always a corporation or government, entities who are themselves "collective." That's important.
Good luck to you, Dan. I hope you find work again soon.
February 26th, 2011 at 9:15 pm
Sam: The right-wing has no problem with workers staging strikes, but thinks management has an equal right to fire them all and hire new workers, if new workers can be found and that's what management wants to do. The right-wing criticisms of unions typically revolve around them continuing to collect power after the problems that necessitated them have gone away and also around the social stigma that one is somehow attacking these workers if one does they work they've refused to do (scabbing).
February 27th, 2011 at 12:49 am
As I noted, cops and firefighters are exempt from the Governor's reforms.
I used the term "civil war" to describe the fight between politicians and their employees, the professional bureaucrats. Both are generally well-educated, middle-to-upper middle class, white-collar professional types with professions that afford them a high degree of power and social prestige. Their jobs are elite and respectable, and a far cry from the sort of menial manual labor unions were originally conceived to protect.
February 27th, 2011 at 1:41 am
My essential problem with this "love it or leave it" corporate mentality is that it is too que sera with things like human dignity or access to social and legal justice that really makes it largely indefensible to anyone concerned with encouraging those goals. For a business to pull a Michael Eisner and say, "As a business we have no obligation to support or even consider political realities no matter how laudable" will only take you as far as you let it. Government is supposed to be the one thing unmoored from the profit motive in the hopes that without it, can create a space for certain services and products to be made available that would otherwise not exist. Rational policy is extension and compromise of this economic philosophy.
The main point though for writing this is to respond to a single point:
"Does all this drama move you? There was a time, not so very long ago, when the idea of a “union protest” would conjure up images of the soot-streaked working class, desperately pleading with old man Rockefeller for less explosive mine shafts, or some such. Now, however, in this era where the majority of unionized Americans work comfortable, white-collar jobs in taxpayer-funded office buildings, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to muster significant sympathy for their plight."
I have enormous difficulty taking sides against people rallying for better wages mostly because so often it should be possible. It is simply impossible to paint the average person who's salary is at stake here as any kind of petulant fat-cat hissing over his ball of yarn. To make the argument that the unions are overcompensated you need to explain how. Is their market value over represented? Is the quality of their work lower than their pay? Conservative critique of public unions seem to focus on the first and a perceived wrongness in well paid public servants. This is ignoring one of the major themes of the article though and is looking at the government and its employee's within a vacuum and not the specific struggle of warring political classes. I guess I just want to advocate realism in the most ineffectual and roundabout way I can think of.
February 27th, 2011 at 2:39 am
Well your argument I was replying to was that cops and firefighters are safe from layoffs and firings.
And they have every right to protest to keep them. As much as some people like to imagine that everyone will receive a pay that they'll live on and they'll never be screwed by their employers, the fact is that's not so. We see it every day as you hear and see more companies out source to cheaper countries to save money since the CEOs can't take a cut in pay, and neither can shareholders. Now it's a state government that had a surplus, but pissed it away giving more tax breaks to companies and CEO pockets that landed them where they are now.
Heck, the union agreed to take cut backs, but the Governor wants a full destruction of the unions.
February 27th, 2011 at 8:37 am
Aren't civil servants anyone working for the federal, and in this case, state governments? This which would include letter-carriers, city maintenance & general labour workers, primary school teachers, librarians, etc.
So while it is true the average wage of civil servants is higher than the private sector – if we look at civil servants as a whole, and include those jobs requiring the "educated elites," – this does not discount the fact that there are also a great many people working for state and local government who are a far cry from being simply paper pushing bureaucrats.
February 27th, 2011 at 10:02 am
The only reason they're exempt, for now, is because they were the only unions that supported his bid for governor.
The same unions have also come out in opposition to these regressive reforms.
February 27th, 2011 at 12:31 pm
The last line of the news post is completely incorrect. It implies that the workers in Wisconsin haven't offered to make any sacrifices, when in fact, they've agreed to nearly everything Walker's proposed — the salary and benefits cuts along with them — but the one thing they feel they must retain is their right to collective bargaining. All they've asked of Walker is to sit down and negotiate with them, yet his contempt for the unions is such that he refuses to do even that. Shutting the working man out of the lawmaking process like that is pretty much the definition of big government overstepping its bounds.
The idea that private sector employees have it better off is also complete nonsense, a dated stereotype that hasn't been true since the boom times of the 90's. My sister graduated college last year, and with her engineering degree was planning to work in the public sector. But then she realized that the highest-paying public job she could find paid about $25k a year, while the private sector was offering nearly double that for essentially the same work. She took the private job because she wanted something close to home, but the difference was staggering.
There is a false dichotomy in this country which says that if your employer happens to be the government, somehow you must have it better off than the rest of us. Which is a bunch of laughable nonsense. Have you guys SEEN our politicians? Have you not noticed how they make careers out of screwing common people? Do you really think that truism magically stops applying if you work for them?
February 27th, 2011 at 1:00 pm
I'm assuming you've never been a member of a public sector union, or at least haven't dug too deep into them. I work for a university in Ontario which is pretty much entirely unionized.
>> "if they were [elites] they would not need collective bargaining."
You are simply wrong. Well, while they may not 'need' collective bargaining, they never give it up. The professors at the university I work at, despite being one of the highest paid groups there overall, have one of the strongest unions. Government lawyers? Unionized. Quebec's government lawyers just went on strike actually. I have a hard time imagining lawyers as being 'blue collar'.
>> "This is not only an opportunistic ideological attempt to break unions but to break our 'vital public services' in general."
Whether it is an ideological attempt or not is mostly irrelevant to the discussion of whether it is the correct decision. You could say Martin Luther King's march in support of Civil Rights was ideological, but that doesn't mean it was incorrect.
To the point, I'd like some evidence that this will 'break' the 'vital public services'. As someone who has worked mostly for public institutions (a college, a university, and a library) over two levels of government (provincial and municipal), both in unionized and non-union positions, I don't buy it. Maybe it's different in the UK, but at least here the public sector unions are very unreasonable, and very vindictive.
Public opinion polls of most of the high-profile public sector strikes in Ontario in the last few years have pretty much ALL sided with the governments over the unions, often by large amounts. The public service is increasingly seen less as 'serving the public' and more 'being served by the public'.
My best friend worked at the local hospital as a cleaner while he was in university, and he was horrified by how unsanitary the place was. A HOSPITAL. It's a public health impediment! What can be done about it? Almost nothing. The union backing the janitor's union pretty much makes it impossible to fire the lazy janitorial staff (and he let me know numerous stories of how lazy they were). My friend shudders at thinking of how many people died because of that. Please tell me how this doesn't break the 'vital public services' more than minor wage cuts?
>> 'The "elite" bankers caused the crisis and should pay for it. '
So all those people who took more debt than they could ever pay back had no part of the crisis? The fraud committed by appraisers and realtors had no part in the crisis? The hesitancy of governments to address trade imbalances had no part of the recession after the crisis? The permissive capital reserve requirements set by governments had no part in the crisis? The mortgage guarantors had no part of the crisis? Your oversimplification of the crisis and your overly simplified solution destroys the credibility of your post.

>> 'what can we expect when we have a Chancellor of the Exchequer who doesn't even have a GCSE in Economics?'
That's a cheap shot because whether he does or not is irrelevant. My friend who is a professor of economics agrees that governments absolutely have to get their budget deficits cut. Does that make him right? Not necessarily, but it makes your dig wrong. You appeal to authority, but even authority doesn't necessarily agree with you.
———————————————
Some of the deficit hawks are crying crocodile tears, like Republicans saying they want to cut the deficit, but they end up crying for high-earner tax cuts first (thereby sabotaging efforts to cut the deficit), but there is more and more need for people to get their fiscal houses in at least some semblance order. Sure, running a massive deficit may 'help the economy grow', but that is always also at the expense of future growth, because that money has to be paid back some time. Current deficits are future taxes.
Not only that, but eventually you run out of people willing to lend you money. Once the 'bond vigilantes' think you will never pay back and therefore stop lending, suddenly you're left with either huge interest rates or you have to monetize the deficit through money printing, essentially paying the deficit through inflation. Or you could default and leave all those pension funds relying on the bonds unable to provide the retirement savings to the elderly, and destroy your credit worthiness for years (and possibly destabilize both your and other countries' banks). Which do you want? Either eat a KNOWN pain now (deficit cutting), your an UNKNOWN pain later.
I absolutely think taxes on the high earners should be higher. I'm not a believer in 'trickle down economics'. I do believe in not saddling the future generations with our debt, however, and the public sector unions here are a major impediment to dealing with it. In good times they're the first to call for raises, and in the bad times, they're the last to get the pay cuts. It's not a fair deal with the public, and I am a part of BOTH SIDES and I can see that.
February 27th, 2011 at 8:57 pm
Seeing as there are tons of stories of negligent or incompetent employees simply being shuffled around, yes. For example, the government worker who got into "Joe the Plumber"'s personal info in an attempt to discredit him. As someone who's been through public schooling in the US, I'd have to say that it was incredibly lax as well. Then there was the semi-striking in New York during the blizzard, which LED TO THE DEATHS OF BABIES. Come on. This is almost cartoonishly greedy.
Also, it's hard to say that government workers are anywhere near the level of power as "normal people", when they are able to derail the lives of everyone in the state (even just the teachers walking out disrupts lives completely) and get the senators to basically shut down the Senate just when the vast majority of the public voices against them.
From what I've read, the unions only agreed to the budget cuts once Walker pulled out his final solution of losing collective bargaining or having massive layoffs; before he gave them that ultimatum, they were resisting any changes whatsoever. I admit that I may have been given the wrong information, though.
I find it hard to see no contradiction in the union's claims that they are "willing to discuss and negotiate" – they have blanketly stated that they are not willing to give up collective bargaining, and the Democratic Senators refuse to return to the capital unless the governor gives up that requirement at all. That's not negotiation or discussion, that's literally "My way or the highway".
Walker may be using the same ultimatums, but at least he is shoring them up with the excuse that they are to rescue the budget. The Democratic senators are doing no such thing (they are so obviously pandering to the unions that it is nauseating), and the unions were willing to, once again, derail the entire state with the excuse of "I want to keep this", in defiance of what the actual state's voters asked for. Yes, there should be no tyranny of the majority, but this is a textbook example of tyranny of the minority.
February 27th, 2011 at 9:39 pm
I don’t have a lot of sympathy for unions in general. I still shop at places with workers protesting, despite getting the middle finger and loud shouting that I must hate America. This from two guys who look like hobos, protesting the Dollar Tree (A dollar store). Apparently, being able to do a price check in a store where everything is a dollar is not a hard skill these days.
As for the teachers, I find this amusing. After being told by the left constantly that anecdotal evidence is not valid in any regard, being told about all their “Special teacher” who “inspired them” raises an eyebrow. I also find it funny that in my own personal experience, the three teachers that made the most difference in my life (1st, 2nd, 3rd) were all in it because they loved teaching, not because they wanted money. Heck, all of them did not belong to the teachers union in any regard. My first grade teacher (who is a friend of my family) had some rather harsh things to say about Wisconsin teachers unions. So all in all, this amuses me.
February 28th, 2011 at 1:31 am
I think a lot of this problem is wrapped up in how we've conflated essential questions of what it means to be a union with the current face of unions today. Failing to separate out questions of what is a union supposed to do for its people and is it getting done? So as someone who supports unions, I don't have to also like everyone of them. The Prison Guard union in California? Fuck those guys. What I haven't heard much about in this issue is really any relevant journalism that wasn't thickly painted with national politics about just precisely how much room between total labor distopia and the greedy feckless whines of an overstuffed middleclass should union's negotiate.
As I understand it, Walker has shown that the issue of union politics was more important to him than whatever dollar amount was on the table.
March 1st, 2011 at 4:06 am
I don't want everyone dragged down to where I am. But, I do think these people simply don't realize how well off they are.
Oh, and I didn't mean to imply that I am currently unemployed. However, I am at my 4th job in 2 years, and did spend about 6 months of those 2 years unemployed.
March 1st, 2011 at 9:32 am
I'm a proud union member and I would be as willing to die for the right to strike as the right to free speech.
Interestingly, the Western political class only sees trade unions as a right when it pretains to other nations. I.e. Reagan and Thacther support of Solidarity (a inspiring socialist trade union exercise in democracy) while they were simultanously crushing unions back in their countries (flight controllers and miners, respectively).
The unions are so hated in the mainstream media because they have the POTENTIAL to represent a very real threat to the politcal order. Union’s are often 'normal' people's only access to democratic organization. People's life revolve around work (as they should- work is the most noble activity of mankind) and unions are the only way people have any say in their working conditions.

In regard to higher wages of unionized jobs- that is partly true. But in BC it is less so. If I worked full time at this union job (van driving) I would be making 180 a day. But for non-unionized seasonal work (forestry) that crops up in this province, I can get in excess of 350 dollars. This has been taken to a new extreme with the oilpatch’s arrival in the Northeast.
Also blue collar and white collar unionism distinctions are harder to see in BC. For example, in a rural indsutrial town such as Castlegar, BC you have two major employers: Zellstoff Celgar (pulp mill) and Selkirk College. Both are representated by the same union- Pulp, Paper and Woodworkers Union of Canada. And like elsewhere the college union only pretains to the support and clerical staff (I think the teachers have an association rather then a union).
Going back to a previous point- unions are potentially very upsetting to capital rule but they are still adhereing the age old Treaty of Detroit where they have accepted capitalism in exchange for capitalist acceptence of collective bargining. Some capitalists are renenging on this and unions are not really fighting back (perhaps Wisconsin is a turning point).
March 1st, 2011 at 9:34 am
Why would a capitalist accept a unionized workforce? Labour certainity (at least for the term of the contract), uniion assumption of some health and pension benefits and more importantly workplace/worker control. Unions can be very efficient at subduing workers, and going after opponents of the industry. Witness the IWWs constant support of BC lumber industry in face of environmental opposition. In a more benign sense, unions often go hand in hand with industry on marketing trips- i.e. Steelworkers with Canfor, Tolko, Westfraser etc. CEOs to China.
It is a whole economy of scale- a major corporation who a need for a huge amount of labour (skilled or otherwise) is often more efficient when they have a stable, well-paid, productive workforce which may not nessicarily be unionized by often is.
Union agreements are closly watched by non-union companies. For example, non-union automakers in Ontario (Toyota, Honda) will cut wages as soon as the CAW in Oshawa agree to concessions and likewise will have to raise wages if CAW workers win increases. This puts the CAW in the high pressure situation as now they know they are fighting for wages of non-unionized workers (and non-due paying) as well.
March 1st, 2011 at 9:36 am
And worker conditions are highly relative to countries. Non-unionized workers in Australia are often better off then union Canadian workers considering Australian have an paid lunch hour (Cdns a unpaid half hour), four weeks paid vacation ( compared to 0 or two- though some earn 4 after a while), and high industry specific min. wages (fruitpicks in Aus- 20$ an hour, Cdn workers- 8-10$ an hour). Conversly, non-union Canadian workers are better off then some unionized South African workers (they have one of the higher percentages of union memberships- a holdover from heavy Communist/Union support of anti-apratheid movements).
At least we can all thank the unions for the weekend (taken in part from a sign in the rural BC industrial town of Trail)
All done… I just get pissy when someone attacks one of my most fundamental and powerful freedoms.
March 1st, 2011 at 9:44 am
Personally, I have had trouble with unions in the past. When I wanted my deck build, a union worker wanted five times what a non union worker wanted(In $/Hour for labor). When I said I would look around, he said that I had better not hire any non-union labor or I would regret it. I did anyways, and my deck has lasted me quite a long time. Unions have every right to strike, just as I have every right to hire non-union worker to do a job if they will do it for less.
March 1st, 2011 at 6:29 pm
This seems like a bit of a hatchet job for you, JJ.
One might argue that police and other unions were excluded from cuts because they supported Walker's campaign.
One might point out the symbiotic relationship of corporate donors and the Republican party, "the former funds the latter during election time, and in exchange, the [Republicans] act as a vanguard of the status quo when it’s time to [reduce workers rights/compensation]."
Others have noted that Walker's "deficit-plagued state’s budget" was not so plagued before multiple rounds of business tax cuts. While the Right often likes to say the *only* way to balance budgets is to cut spending, that's not true at all; one can always raise taxes to increase government revenue. Cutting spending is the Right's *preferred* method; even then, there are a lot of caveats so cuts don't impact their spending priorities.
Just as I get bored of the angry Left, focusing on Right's talking points doesn't make for a convincing argument. And neither seem to offer a sustainable solution.

Actually the WI civil servants are slightly underpaid, after controlling for education levels and hours worked. So much for those truths.
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/ezra-klein/2011/02/are_wisconsins_state_and_local.html
And given that median household income has stagnated for the past 30 years, while the ultra-rich suck up all the productivity gains, I would have trouble sympathizing with union-busting even if they were “overpaid”. The problem is that privately employed Americans don’t get enough, not that civil servants get too much.
March 7th, 2011 at 4:34 am
I have to comment on what you're saying about private businesses somehow being better just because they've got profit to motivate them:
Remember the Health Insurance industry.
I think that should settle that goddamn myth forever.
There are people who benefit from the government and leech off it, but bottom-tier employees and desk jockeys aren't those. The drain is, much like in the private sector, based in the upper ranks.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

This is the topic that I have an amazing strong passion about. There’s no doubt that most people today forget how important this subject matter is. I believe the foundation upon which a great many other things are built of course , if we do this action wrong, there are several dire consequences in the long run. As a result, we has to be careful and think about how precisely we want to strategy this topic. I thank the writer for giving a excellent first try at getting close to it.

I totally go along with you and I could see your blog post is based on your own private experience. Writing all the way from experience is key in order to letting others understand everything about this topic. I’ve seen that on my web site. Just recently, I made a post where I actually documented my personal practical experience. I sent out tweets and then did a full post having photos and audio tracks explaining how others could solve their own personal problems concerning this same issue. Thanks for your blog post.

@ Newman I know what your saying there . In the current economy its tough to find a job that pays well and is consistent. I have found that if you just work hard and are consistent you can succeed. Look at the author of this page , they are clearly hard working and have just been consistent over time and are now enjoying at least what would appear as somewhat of a success. I would encourage everyone to just keep hustling and moving forward.

Things i have seen in terms of pc memory is there are technical specs such as SDRAM, DDR and so forth, that must match the technical specs of the motherboard. If the pc’s motherboard is rather current while there are no main system issues, modernizing the memory space literally will take under an hour or so. It’s one of several easiest computer upgrade types of procedures one can visualize. Thanks for expressing your ideas.

The Pack needs a ball control element to their game. Grant has too much of of a workload. Once he comes out the game, the entire stadium knows a pass is coming. Report this comment Reply Mark says: July 26, 2010 at 8:33 pm jimmy, winning teams usually get more pro-bowlers than they deserve. Teams that get a lot of ink get higher numbers. Its pretty meaningless. #4 made the pro-bowl with the Jets based on early voting, how is that relevant. The Saints had a lot of holes but got by on aggressive play calling and a reliable QB, not great talent. Report this comment Reply jimmyus333333 says: July 26, 2010 at 11:55 pm Mark,Im not so much interested in if they make the pro-bowl, but have players that play like they belong there.Id say that Favre, Rison, Reggie, Desi & LeRoy all played like that late in the yearwith Jackson, Hentrich, Timmerman, Levens, Eugene as the me-toos.That was quite the team Ron built. Its going to take some convincing for me with a few games past the pre-season to see if our current lot can measure up to what talent is required to make it to the SB.I cant make that kind of call with the way the roster looks today. Rocky can. Al can. A few of the press can.I think our team is way too young and inexperienced to make the leap we need. Report this comment Reply Mark says: July 27, 2010 at 2:59 am With Hentrich and Desmond Howard, point taken. We need to catch a little lightning by trade or waiver wire or were the Chargers, because of our return game. In 2005, the Chargers went 9-7 yet failed to make the playoffs and were criticized for their inability to win close games early in the season
