Is Terry Fox a good hero?
Thanks to everyone for their generous donations in last week’s Filibuster pledge drive. I really appreciate your generosity, and the money raised will go to good use. You may notice that there have been yet more reforms to the site in the meantime.
* * *
Last week also marked the 30th Anniversary of Terry Fox winning the Order of Canada, and many cities across the country held their 30th annual Terry Fox memorial run in commemoration. Fox remains one of Canada’s most beloved national heroes, but a man whose legacy is rarely critically examined. Here’s my take:
When I was in grade 3, I can remember my elementary school teacher giving us a lecture on heroism, and the sorts of people we should and should not revere as heroes. Superheroes, she said firmly, were entirely out of the question. Worshipping a fictional character, who by design has no imperfections or failings whatsoever, is to set grotesquely unreal expectations. The reason we revere real-world humans, by contrast, is precisely because of their imperfections. They were able to overcome their flaws in the pursuit of something greater, and so can we.
I am not sure at what point of the year I was taught this valuable lesson, but I am fairly sure it did not coincide with our school’s annual Terry Fox Run, in which we all donned our Terry Fox t-shirts and read bright picture books about the great martyr’s perfect life. Worthy though his cause may be, there can be little doubt that the contemporary Canadian nationalist-cultural establishment has transformed the late Mr. Fox into the very sort of demigod my teacher originally warned against — noble, flawless, and utterly unassailable in his ambitions and deeds.
Obviously, no sane person can condemn the overall idea of Terry Fox, whose 1980 “Marathon of Hope” saw him trudge halfway across Canada on his mechanical leg to raise money for cancer research, or the extraordinary longevity of the various successor charities and foundations that sprung up in the aftermath of his death. It is, however, an open question as to whether or not the extreme deification of the man himself — which, it must be acknowledged, is a personality cult almost without parallel in the western world — is ultimately a benefit or hindrance to the causes he embodied.
Take for example, the first made-for-TV movie about Terry Fox, The Terry Fox Story (1983). Produced by the devil Americans at HBO, the film committed the egregious sin of depicting Terry Fox as a man who occasionally got angry and swore at people, and thus garnered a chilly reception in some quarters. “We feel no movie, book, anything could portray Terry’s motives or personality accurately,” said the Fox family in a United Press interview following the release. A lamer, more acceptably saccharine film of the Fox story was later produced by the Canadian network CTV in 2005, to a much less polarized (albeit bored) reception.
That’s the thing about Terry Fox. At some point, we as a country collectively decided that we very much did not want to learn anything more about Terry than the well-worn collection of feel-good anecdotes and Halmarkian cliches we were already comfortable with. Phrases like “new revelations” or “a complex portrait” will thus never accompany any new biography of the man, nor will any of his contemporaries or peers ever go on record spouting anything but the most vapid and unchallenging reflections. In this sense, the historiographical arc of Mr. Fox’s legacy is quite unlike that of most other heroes of western lore, who usually start out venerated, are later critically revisited, and then eventually praised for their multi-sided humanity. Terry remains stalled in phase one, and no one seems to have much of a problem with keeping him there.
And let’s be clear, there are controversies to the Terry Fox story, as there are with any historic episode worth noting. Fox’s adult conversion to Evangelical Christianity, for instance, and the often preachy nature of his speeches, is never much discussed these days, presumably because it’s taboo to acknowledge religious motivations in our current era of PC secularism. Along with his supposed temper, Fox may have likewise possessed the critical flaw of pride, considering that the health problems that would eventually derail his run were in large part attributable to his refusal to be X-rayed or otherwise medically monitored on his journey — until his symptoms became too intense to ignore. Even the Marathon of Hope itself was not immune to criticism at the time. As Douglas Coupland briefly mentions in his biography of the runner, Fox did have his skeptics in the press, who publicly doubted the veracity of some of Terry’s proclaimed mile counts. A 22-year-old college dropout claiming to be running the equivalent of endless back-to-back Olympic marathons for weeks on end seemed suspiciously grandiose, a skepticism fed by the fact that many of his early runs were unwitnessed by anyone other than Fox’s own travel posse.
Such criticisms may very well be completely unjustified and unwarranted, but not simply on the basis that Fox was perfect and never sinned — though this is basically the only level most of us are intellectually equipped to engage with any sort of Terry-skepticism.
The undeniable heroism of Terry Fox should draw from the fact that he was a fairly average boy who was motivated to embrace a cause much larger than himself. The story seems considerably less remarkable, however, if we declare that no, the cause was in fact, exactly as large and epic as Terry himself. If heroism is to be strictly confined to the realm of immaculate supermen — “an angel,” as the producer of the second movie would quip — then geez, why should the rest of us even bother?
Today, when we acknowledge that Martin Luther King did, as was widely assumed, often engage in adultery, or that Mother Theresa was a bit of a tyrant to work for, we concede that supreme perfection is impossible as a human ideal, but also acknowledge that the greatest acts of humanity often occur through imperfect vessels. Indeed, imperfection breeds familiarity and compassion for a thoroughly imperfect world.
We’ve all had loved ones claimed by cancer, or at the very least, intimately known someone who has. And as anyone who has suffered through the experience will be quick to note, the horror of the disease — like any terminal illness — is the way it so destabilizes the stable banality of work, family, and leisure through a sudden, greatly unwanted influx of hysterics and drama. In such a context, it’s hardly surprising that cancer does not always bring out the best in everyone, and that its sufferers cannot always assume the heroic stoicism that the contemporary culture has unfairly come to expect.
If the purpose of Terry Fox is to imply that suffering must be concealed by an iron-willed crusader’s spirit to be admirable, or that uncompromised dignity and blinding-smile joy is the correct attitude to carry oneself with at all times, then perhaps the current deified version of the man is an appropriate hero. But if we concede to acknowledge a more realistic portrait, and admit that Terry was, in all likelihood, a man who possessed complications, contradictions, and character flaws like the rest of us, then perhaps we’ll have something a bit more useful.
I wonder when we’ll be trusted to handle that story.

It's always struck me that Terry Fox must have had an extremely good publicist – one whose name most people will probably never be familiar with. But then, the same can be said for a lot of heroes.
I can't actually recall ever hearing before that he gave any speeches of note at all. Maybe that just shows my lack of familiarity with the subject.

"it must be acknowledged, is a personality cult almost without parallel in the western world "
Hyperbole. Compare Lance Armstrong, the aforementioned Mother Theresa (Hitchens just wrote a joke of a book to get press), Dale Earnhardt in the American south, among others. Canadians aren't half as hysterical as you seem to think they are.

(I'm the guy who's commented on unposted toons on Facebook. Can't do that here. :P)
The recent ESPN/TSN documentary on Terry Fox painted a much more even picture of him and alluded to a number of his flaws, and I'm glad to know them before it DOES make him more human, and therefore more admirable as a "mere mortal." At points he was homesick and unhappy, as anyone would be. When he got to Ontario his speaking commitments got in the way of the running, and he got extremely angry at the Canadian Cancer Society publicist that was travelling with him for days on end, as well as the Society itself. His stubborness was shown in an interview in which he snapped back at a reporter who questioned his health. To paraphrase: "I don't need to see a doctor if I need to see one I'll go see one but I don't need one right now." (All one sentence because he was unhappy with the question and spoke fast, with a slightly angry tone of voice.)
September 30th, 2010 at 9:08 pm
He also wouldn't even let his doctor fully adjust and set his new prosthesis because he just had to stubbornly get back to running, regardless of anything else. He also missed numerous scheduled doctors' appointments. Why? If he'd paused long enough, could they have caught his lung cancer in time? His faith was even alluded to in a sound byte of his, "I believe in miracles. I have to."
The skepticism about running through Quebec isn't entirely unwarranted, but I believe he did run through it based on this: once in Ontario, he constantly made his mile targets while the spotlight was on him. He was fully capable of running such crazy distances, so unless there is true proof that he didn't run through Quebec, I'll side with the better story based on possibility. Terry Fox was stubborn and took too much weight onto his shoulders. He was imperfect, which makes him a real hero.
October 1st, 2010 at 2:12 pm
I also watched the ESPN documentary just yesterday, and I really appreciated a more realistic view of Terry. Having grown up in BC after Terry was gone, I always participated in the Terry Fox runs without really knowing much about him. I thought the documentary did a really good job of portraying what the whole ordeal would have really been like and I'm glad I know a little bit more about the man now.
Mez, Terry Fox was a Canadian who lost his leg to cancer and decided to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society by running across Canada. He started at the east coast but only have it to Western Ontario before the cancer returned and he had to stop his "Marathon of Hope". Every year, schools and organizations across Canada organize Terry Fox runs to continue raising money for research.
October 1st, 2010 at 3:10 pm
Well, they both ran, I suppose, but the similarities end there. In particular, Forrest Gump is a fictional character. :)
October 3rd, 2010 at 3:08 pm
One my favourite filibuster articles. I have the martyrdom Terry Fox enshrined in statues, monuments and mountains (at least their names) across Canada i,e Victoria, Prince George, Tete Juane Cache (Where Mt. Terry Fox is), Thunder Bay, Ottawa, and St. John's.
My favourite by far was the original Prince George statue. It was the site where he finished the 17 mile Prince George to Boston marathon and on the spot announced his intention to run across Canada. The statue was life size and positioned on the spot where he made his announcement. It is no where special- behind the pool, in front of decrepit motels, and near some the worst PG crime areas.
You could see him a normal man (a short fella at that) and he was smiling and joyful- a hard feature in come by in most depictions of him. And it was far better then the grotesque 10 foot tall Thunder Bay monstrosity. Unfortunately, some one threw a rock at Terry's hear giving him minor hair damage. PG's reponse was to litterally put him on a pedastal (5 foot tall). With the more real and visceral public protrayel of Terry Fox out of the way I pretty much try to ignore the more popular images- which is a shame because his legacy becomes obscured.

One more thing I would like to mention is that instead of trying to accommodate all your online degree courses on days and nights that you complete work (since most people are drained when they go back home), try to have most of your classes on the week-ends and only 1 or 2 courses for weekdays, even if it means a little time off your weekend break. This is beneficial because on the week-ends, you will be more rested plus concentrated in school work. Thanks a bunch for the different guidelines I have learned from your blog.

I have noticed that over the course of developing a relationship with real estate entrepreneurs, you’ll be able to come to understand that, in every single real estate financial transaction, a percentage is paid. In the end, FSBO sellers tend not to “save” the commission. Rather, they struggle to earn the commission by means of doing an agent’s occupation. In this, they shell out their money and time to conduct, as best they’re able to, the responsibilities of an real estate agent. Those assignments include disclosing the home by marketing, presenting the home to buyers, making a sense of buyer desperation in order to induce an offer, preparing home inspections, handling qualification checks with the mortgage lender, supervising repairs, and aiding the closing.

I appreciate you posting this article. I’m decidedly frustrated with struggling to search out pertinent and rational comment on this matter. Everybody now goes to the very far extremes to either drive home their viewpoint that either: everyone else in the planet is wrong, or two that everyone but them does not really understand the situation. Many thanks for your succinct, relevant insight.

This can be a well written article, if only all writers offered the same value of content material while you, the internet will be a much better place. Make sure you keep it up!

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

This wonderful product is simply the best because it liberates vast amount of far infrared heat; that distributes eventually on the whole surface and that will keep your locks safe and full of moisture. Also protect them from any spot damages. It also produces the right quantity of negative ions. These are really effective in order to stop the unneeded chemical; bacteria and fungi etc.Its automatic heat control system not only gives you the heat control setting to set it according to your need. But if it is not being used for more than 30 minutes, automatically its heater will turn off which makes it light when it comes on power-consumption. GHD Hair Straightener has the ability to control its own internal temperature. To avoid internal condensation, the straightener turns-off itself when the temperature of the room falls below 8 degree Celsius. So what you are waiting for? The best electronic products are currently available in the market grab it up with GHD IV Salon Styler Ceramic or GHD IV Styler Ceramic Hair Straightener. You got it?
