This is an actual quote from Liberal Leader Ignatief, who authored a rambling, mushy editorial about the Olympics and Canadian identity (or something) for the New York Times last week.
I have never understood where this fashionable myth of the “politely patriotic” Canadian comes from. Ride any train in Vancouver at the moment and you’ll be greeted with a scene identical to the one above, which, in turn, is not terribly different from what you’ll see at your average Canada Day celebration, or any other competitive-patriotic occasion.
I suppose if you lead an upper-crust, ivory tower sort of life, like, say, if you are leader of the Liberal Party, you’ll rarely come into contact with the sort of beer-soakedĀ chauvinismĀ that thrives among the Kraft Dinner set. But it’s there just the same, a loud, boorish style of national pride on par with anything the Italians, Mexicans, or even the much-hated Americans produce.
