So President Obama held good to his promise and made Canada his first international visit last week, traveling to Ottawa to meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
It would be a lie to say the two men enjoyed an easy chemistry, or anything like that. I think they’re both respectable, intelligent politicians who take their jobs seriously, but they’re also very different, both ideologically and culturally. So any hope of a new era of Canada-US friendship because of Obama will have to be put on hold for a while.
It’s rather ironic, of course, that a country as famously liberal as Canada would have a conservative government to greet the most left-wing president in modern US history.
