The nation of Iceland, the same country that elected the world’s first-ever woman president in 1980, now has the world’s first-ever gay head of state. Ms. Johanna Sigurdardottir, the leader of the socialist party, was appointed interim prime minister last week, following the resignation of embattled former prime minister Geir Haarde.
Sigurdardottir is an open lesbian, and is in a civil union with another woman, under that country’s domestic partnership laws. Though a historic first, an election is just around the corner, and time will tell if Iceland is progessive enough to actually elect the interim PM to a full term.
