Well, Prime Minister Harper broke his promise to bring fixed election dates to Canada and unilaterally dissolved parliament this week, forcing new elections to be held on October 14.
Harper’s justification was that parliament was “not working” in its present form, that too many bills were being held up and delayed by opposition politicians filibustering and delaying his legislation. But at the same time Harper himself has said he expects this election to not really change things much, and will probably just produce another plurality for his party.
So what is this election about? And why do we need it? I don’t know. I’m quite profoundly bored by it all, really. Especially when such a fascinating and substantial election is occurring in the US simultaneously.
