Canadian interest in the war in Afghanistan continues to decline. A recent poll suggests nearly 60% of the country favors withdrawing all of Canada’s 2,000-odd troops from that country by 2009 at the latest.
The big problem is that Canadian soldiers keep dying in that conflict, nearly 80 so far. And every time one of them dies it is treated as an enormous to-do in the Canadian media, who seem keen to “humanize the cost” of this war to Canadians as much as possible.
One hears very little about the plight of Afghanistan, however. The Conservatives say we need to stay for at least a couple more years to “finish the job” of rebuilding the country and keeping the peace, but the other parties portray the conflict as little more than a pointless slog that is not benefiting Canada in any way. The era of selfless, ultra-compassionate Canadian foreign policy appears to be over. Or maybe it never existed.
