Three by-elections were held in Quebec yesterday, and the results brought good news to everyone except Stephane Dion and his Liberal Party.
The Bloc Quebecois saw one of their MPs soundly re-elected with increased support, the NDP won their first Quebec seat in over a decade, and the Conservatives jumped more than 20% in one riding to wrestle a new MP from a traditional Liberal stronghold.
The Liberals got nothing, which comes as something of a blow to Mr. Dion, considering he was supposed to help his party reverse the trend of conservative gains in Quebec. The pundits have probably gone too far in calling this “the beginning of the end” for Dion’s leadership, but still, there’s no denying the symbolic impact of the results.
