Iranian and American diplomats had their first face-to-face meeting in 28 years yesterday. Safe in the office of the Prime Minister of Iraq, the American and Iranian ambassadors discussed the situation in that country, and their shared interest in seeing an end to the instability.
For most of the last three decades the United States and Iran have had no formal diplomatic relations of any sort, a legacy of the Islamic Revolution of 1979. But things have started to thaw over the last few years, and the twin crises of Iraq and the Iranian nuclear program have raised interests on both sides for a diplomatic breakthrough.
