A poll taken last week suggests that the Green Party of Canada is now the fourth most popular political party in the country, finally overtaking the separatist Bloc Quebecois in terms of support. 11% of Canadians say they would vote Green in the next election, compared to 8% for the Bloc.
It is very fashionable in this country to predict that the Green Party is on the up-and-up, usually at the expense of the NDP. My problem with this prediction, however, is that people have been making it for years. The Greens may poll high, but on election day it seems voters are still too timid, and cast their ballots for one of the established parties instead. Even my own province of British Columbia, supposedly the most pro-environmentalist part of Canada, cannot even manage to elect a single green to the provincial parliament, let alone the national one.
