The Republican Party is just a tool of the Christian Right, right? That’s been the conventional wisdom for so long, after all. But yesterday on 60 Minutes they had an interview with a prominent evangelical leader, David Kuo, who alleged just the opposite, that the GOP actually cares little for his community, other than as a cheap base that can be gullibly rallied and manipulated to win elections.
In his new book, Mr. Kuo, who once advised the President on faith-based initiatives, claims that Karl Rove routinely referred to evangelicals as “the nuts,” and saw them as a group that could be made to toe the Republican Party line, rather than vice-versa. On 60 Minutes Kuo made much of the fact that by some astonishing co-incidence, one of the major tenants of Christianity- compassion for the poor- was always conveniently absent from the supposedly evangelical-friendly GOP agenda.
