The big question always is “if we know where Bin Laden is, why can’t we get him?” It’s presently the opinion of most in the know that Osama is currently hanging out in Pakistan, specifically in the so-called “mountainous tribal areas” near the Afghan border.
General Musharraf, the leader of Pakistan, has not been much help however. Despite being a US ally, the present Pakistani government greatly fears the domestic repercussions of meddling in these largely autonomous, ultra-fundamentalist regions of the country. Osama himself is not terribly unpopular among the Pakistani people, and the harder Musharraf pushes against him, the more deadly the Islamist forces are likely to push back.
There are presently a number of conflicting reports being released alleging that Pakistan may now have actually agreed to a ceasefire of sorts with the Taliban in the tribal areas, implying that they no longer really care about the hunt for Bin Laden at all.
