I live in a part of the world with a large ex-pat Chinese community. Within this community there are a lot of activists who are members of something called the “Falun Gong” movement, which is basically a sort of flaky meditation/exercise group.
Anyway, the Falun Gongers often hold protests and hurl all sorts of extravagant accusations at the Chinese government, which they claim brutally oppresses their members back in China. One such allegation was that the Chinese government kills Falun Gong practitioners and harvests their organs. I never really used to take such claims seriously.
But now an independent investigation has been held on the matter, headed by Canada’s former minister of Asia-Pacific affairs. After much thorough research, his team reached the conclusion that far from being paranoid ramblings, the harvesting and selling of Falun Gong organs remains a very real phenomenon in modern China.
