For a long time no one really ran Somalia. The country had no government and rival warlords just shot at each other from their little camps. But in recent weeks, a group known as the Islamic Courts Union has consolodated near-total control over the country’s capital- a feat no other political group has been able to do.
In the short time they’ve been in power, the Islamic Courts have shown signs that they intend to govern as extreme hardline Islamic fundamentalists. They have already outlawed television and soccer, and the other day a leading cleric declared that any man who does not pray five times a day should be put to death. Read more about it.
