Canada has long prided itself on having a progressive policy of “multiculturalism” towards immigrants. What exactly this means is hard to precisely articulate. In practice, however, a lot of it has apparently entailed simply allowing immigrant communities to do whatever they want. Given the option, a lot of Canada’s migrants have remained very segregated from mainstream Canadian society, never assimilating into, or even caring for the country’s dominant values.
This “hands off” approach seems to create conditions rife for radicalism, as isolated ethnic communities become captivated by the ideologies of various “community leaders” who seek to keep their people tied to the politics and hate of the old country. In the past we’ve seen it happen with Canada’s Sikh Indians, Tamil Sri Lankans, and now, Middle Eastern Muslims, all of whom have supported terrorism while in Canada.
