China and Sudan

China and Sudan

There have been a lot of irate newspaper columns and public protests over the Sudan situation recently. Despite some initial optimistic predictions, things are apparently not getting better there, and the senseless killing continues.

There have been many cries for the international community to “do something” to stop the deaths, and the fact that the UN has not done anything to date has fueled a lot of wild conspiracizing. Last night I heard some African activist woman on the CBC declare nothing was being done because of white “racism.” Not many people have pointed much blame at China though, even though their government has steadfastly vowed to veto any UN sanctioned “violation of Sudan’s sovereignty-” largely to protect their own oil interests there. Here’s a good editorial on the matter.
