Queen Elizabeth II turned 80 years old yesterday, an event that was greeted with much official celebration within the United Kingdom, and to a much lesser extent the other Commonwealth realms (like Canada) as well.
In many newspapers the Queen was given glowing praise for her 54 years on the throne, with words like “commitment” and “dignity” being thrown around a lot. My favorite comments came from the Governor General of Canada, however, who quipped “Her Majesty has demonstrated a deep and abiding knowledge of, and affection for, this country and the Canadian people.” I would have assumed possessing an “abiding knowing of” and “affection for” the country you are Head of State of would sort of be a given, but that’s just me.
