French President Jacques Chirac threw out a highly controversial labor law earlier this week, bowing to intense public pressure. The law would have made it easier to fire youths- something which is quite difficult to do under present French law. The proposal, generated weeks of huge union and student protests, however. There was even talk of a general strike.
But it seems there is always talk of a general strike in France. In the last year alone we’ve seen massive protests on everything from cartoons to immigration. Who knows, maybe there’ll be another revolution. Nothing would surprise me these days.
