Dubai Ports World pulled out of its controversial business deal with the United States this week, in a response to a major (and in my mind largely xenophobic) American political backlash to the thought of the Arab firm running several US shipping ports.
President Bush was a big supporter of the deal, and is now arguing the irrational hostility to the proposal has hurt Arab/American relations.
“I’m concerned about a broader message this issue could send to our friends and allies around the world, particularly in the Middle East,” he said. “In order to win the war on terror, we have got to strengthen our friendships and relationships with moderate Arab countries in the Middle East.”
