The other day President Bush approved a deal whereby a state-owned firm operating out of the United Arab Emirates would take over the management of six key US shipping ports.
Now despite the fact that the UAE government is a close friend of the US and an ally in the war on terror, and despite the fact that even under the new ownership the vast, vast majority of US port operations would continue to be handled by Americans, many conservatives in the US are protesting the move. In the words of Stephen Colbert, it just doesn’t “feel right” for Arabs to be running US ports, regardless of what the facts say.
