Former Prime Minister Paul Martin has resigned as leader of the Liberal Party, meaning there is now an open race on to determine his successor.

At one time, everyone wanted to be leader of the Liberal Party because it was always in power. In fact, in all of Canadian history there has only been one Liberal leader who was never Prime Minister.

But now the party is out of power, and as a result the job doesn’t seem so appealing anymore. The three front runners, former Deputy Prime Minister John Manely, former New Brunswick Premier Frank McKenna, and former Newfoundland Premier Brian Tobin have all announced they no longer have a desire to run.

This does not bode well for the future of the party…

Hi, just stumbled on your page from reddit. It’s not an article I would typically read, but I loved your perspective on it. Thanks for making a blog post worth reading!

I find that fact you shared – about only 1 liberal party leader NOT being PM – to be fascinating for some reason. ~Blitz
