Toronto has been experiencing quite a rash of gun violence in this last year. The most recent shooting (#52) came on Monday, when a 15 year old girl died after being caught in the crossfire when gunfire erupted on a busy street filled with holiday shoppers.
A lot of politicians are still in extreme denial about the problem, however. We are taught to think of gun violence as an “American” problem (Bowling for Columbine certainly helped cement this mindset) and thus many assume any Canadian gun violence MUST in turn be due to some sort of “Americanization” of Canada.
Says Mayor David Miller: “The U.S. is exporting its problem of violence to the streets of Toronto.”
