Ed Schreyer was Canada’s Governor General from 1979 to 1984. He has recently come out of retirement to announce that he intends to run for a seat in the parliament in this current election, under the banner of the New Democratic Party.
Governor Generals are supposed to be these magical, non-partisan creatures. Schreyer’s decision to run for office thus shatters a major convention, and establishes a precedent. I think this is the first time in the history of the Commonwealth any direct representative of the Queen has entered partisan politics.
