The LATEST patronage scandal to emerge out of Canada is the sordid tale of David Dingwall. Dingwall was some Liberal hack political figure, and the Prime Minister appointed him President of the Royal Canadian Mint. While there, Mr. Dingwall charged taxpayers over $800,000 in personal expenses, buying everything from meals to packs of gum on the government dime.
Anyway, he has recently resigned. But now, surprise surprise, the Liberals are still going to give him generous “severance pay.” For a while they were claiming they were legally obligated to give it to him, but reporters have since discovered that no such law exists. Now the current speculation is that some high-rollers in the Liberal Party convinced him to resign only by promising him he’d get his severance pay. If they take it away now, he’d sue. It’s really a lose-lose situation.
