I’ve noticed that the President and the Defense Secretary often attempt to comfort critics of the Iraqi situation by making allusions to the United States’ own turbulent founding. Personally, I find such comparisons to be more of an admission of defeat than a statement of encouragement. Don’t we learn about history in order to escape the mistakes of the past, not simply repeat them?
