Even though she has yet to assume office, Michaelle Jean, the designated Governor General of Canada, has already managed to find herself embroiled in a bunch of controversies. The biggest discussion at the moment is over Ms. Jean’s alleged history of support for the Quebec independence movement. She and her husband have lots of high-profile separatist friends, and when asked how she herself voted in the 1995 referendum on secession, Ms. Jean refused to answer.
Of course, she has since made a statement denying that either she or her husband have ever been formal members of a separatist party or movement. But as to whether or not they were (or are still) emotional supporters of the goal…. well, that is still unclear.
