Last Friday Sandra Day O’Connor announced that she was retiring from the Supreme Court. It’s been more than a decade since a Supreme Court justice has retired, so needless to say her move is causing great political ripples.
Many are expecting a huge political battle to ensue as Congress attempts to name a successor. In today’s highly polarized political climate a new Supreme Court judge is considered a key fighting point for both sides, as this era of judicial activism has given the Supreme Court more power than ever before. It will be interesting to see just how partisan the battle will get.
