In a move that has gotten a lot of international press, earlier this week the Canadian parliament finally passed a bill legalizing gay marriage. The vote was quite close, because even though Paul Martin’s Liberal Party was officially in favor of the bill, many Liberal MPs voted against it anyway. In order to secure its passage Martin allied with the separatist Bloc Quebecois Party who wanted this bill much more badly than he ever did. By throwing this bone to the Bloc Martin was able to extend the session of parliament for a little while longer, and thus get a few more of his own priority bills passed before the summer recess.
This marriage of convenience between the Bloc and the Libs is unlikely to last very long. I’m sure by this time next year the separatists will have resumed happily non-confidence voting the PM at every given opportunity.
