There is yet another poll out that seems to reflect the rise of anti-American sentiment in Canada. Apparently America’s approval rating among Canadians has slipped almost 15 points in recent years, from 72% in 2002 to 59% today.
But that’s not what inspired this toon. The same poll revealed that 92% of Canadians believe they are beloved by other countries. Based on my own experiences I believe Canada’s lofty self-image is slowly transforming into a form of cocky arrogance. Canadians don’t really do much in matters of foreign affairs anymore, yet we increasingly try to play off the anti-American sentiments of foreigners to our own advantage. We assume simply being “not American” is good enough to elicit praise and generousity. That’s all fine and dandy, but there are 191 other “not America” countries out there. What makes us so great?
