Paul Martin will stay in office for at least several more months. Yesterday was the day of the second non-confidence vote, which Martin managed to survived by a single vote. Independent MP Chuck Cadman changed his mind at the last minute, and decided to vote AGAINST the non-confidence vote, even though he had voted FOR a different non-confidence vote less than a week earlier. Since Cadman and Belinda (see yesterday’s toon) had now switched sides, this caused the vote in parliament to tie, with 152 in favor and 152 against. The Speaker of the House then cast the tie-breaking vote, and since he is a Liberal, big surprise, he voted to let Martin survive.
This means there will be no emergency June election, and more importantly, no accountability.
