Right now the big debate in Congres is over the proposed Republican ban of filibustering. Democrats have traditionally used the technique as a way to stall votes on judicial nominations, but Republican leader Bill Frist is sick of this, so he’s seeking to ban the filibuster altogether. This would in turn fast-track his party’s picks.
The whole thing is motivated by a Republican desire to get more conservative judges into the federal courts, and thus stem the tide of the “activist” liberal judges. As you may recall from a previous cartoon, Republican House Leader Tom DeLay has been particularly vocal on this topic.
