For many years now the province of Alberta has been holding democratic elections to fill their vacant Senate seats. And for many years the Prime Ministers of Canada have been ignoring them, and just giving the jobs to their partisan buddies. Last week Prime Minister Martin appointed a few new Albertans to the Senate, but openly ignored the recent Senate elections and picked candidates of his own chosing.
According to the Canadian constitution, the Prime Minister (or rather the “Governor General”) appoints Senators. There is nothing that says the PM cannot appoint Senators who won elections, but the Liberals like pretending there is.
