20 years ago, back in 1985, at least 300 Canadians were murdered when a gang of Sikh extremists blew up an Air India jetliner that was leaving British Columbia. At the time, it was the worst terrorist attack in North American history.
For 20 years the government has been trying to prosecute the case, and this week, after a $130 million dollar investigation, both of the chief suspects were found “not guilty” by a Vancouver judge.
The main reason why the guys got off is not necessarily because they were innocent, but rather because the Mounties and the Canadian intelligence services staged about the most incompetent investigation ever. So much evidence was lost, destroyed, or simply ignored by the cops, and as a result the prosecutors were unable to provide a solid case against the accused, despite tons of seemingly obvious circumstantial proof.
This verdict is a hugely depressing one for Canada, and the long-term consequences of it are still unknown. For more on the case check out this site
