A couple of countries in Africa still have slavery. Niger is one of them.

The President of Niger was all set to partake in a special ceremony in which 7,000 Niger slaves would be formally liberated, as part of that country’s ongoing efforts to abolish slavery once and for all. But then at the last minute the event had to be called off. Apparently the Nigeran government does not want to publically call attention to the fact that the country still has slaves to free in the first place. Officially, slavery does not exist in Niger, so they can’t have people going around and doing things that contradict that message. BBC has the scoop!
