The Asian Kingdom of Bhutan became the world’s first smoke-free nation last week, when the government banned the sale and use of all tobacco products in the country.
I think this achievement would be more notable if it occurred in a democratic country, as opposed to an absolute monarchy like Bhutan. I hate smoking as much as anyone, but when a government has already taken away most of their peoples’ freedom, taking away their freedom to smoke isn’t really much of an accomplishment. No one really knows much about Bhutan though, so it’s easy to praise the country for being “progressive” out of confusion. But that misses the larger picture.
