There is quite an epic struggle going on in Canada right now, and for once it doesn’t involve Quebec. Daniel Williams, the Premier of Newfoundland has removed all Canadian flags from the province’s capital in an act of open rebellion against the federal government. Williams is mad because the federal government is talking about cutting their financial bailouts to the province on the grounds that their recent offshore oil royalities should provide Newfoundland with sufficient cash on its own.
Williams wants to negotiate with Prime Minister Martin, but Martin says he has to hoist the flags back up before he will grant an audience.
