For a long time it was expected that the Canadian Supreme Court would eventually declare gay marriage legal across Canada. Back when he was Prime Minister, Chretien had asked the court to consider whether or not heterosexual-only marriage was unconstitutional.
Well, yesterday they finally gave their ruling, and it essentially said “we don’t care, you politicians can do whatever you want.” So now the ball is in Martin’s court. He now has to actually pass a bill in the parliament to make gay marriage legal. This will no doubt be a very divisive exercise for him and his party. It’s much easier when a court just decrees something and you don’t have to deal with the political fallout.
