The European Union has now officially agreed to begin the negotiations over Turkey’s proposed entry to the group.
It’s a very divisive topic in EU-land. Some believe allowing Turkey to join would bring massive strategic and military benefits to the EU, because of the nation’s large army and proximity to the Middle East and Asia. Others however remain skeptical as to whether or not Turkey’s legacy of military rule, repeated allegations human rights abuses, backwards laws, and Islamic culture make the country “European” enough to enter the Union.
