Picking a Cabinet

Picking a Cabinet

In Canada we have an interesting way of making cabinets. Basically there is a small group of members of parliament who are cozy with the PM, and they just take turns with the various jobs. Yesterday Paul Martin “shuffled” his cabinet around a bit, and gave the ministers different jobs. Like the Foreign Affairs Minister is now the Defense Minister, and the Trade Minister is now the Foreign Minister, and so forth.

The system is even weirder when you consider in many cases the men and women in question don’t even know what new job they’ll be getting until the night before, when they get a last minute phone call from the PM. More often than not, making people ministers in Canada is more about furthering political careers than actually attempting to get qualified people into positions of influence.
