Prime Minister Martin has formed a great deal of his re-election strategy on the idea that all Canadians hated, and continue to hate the Iraq war, and thus hate the pro-war Stephen Harper and his Conservative crew. When things were going bad for the Americans in Iraq, this seemed to be a fairly apt strategy, and the Liberal ads which highlighted Harper’s past support for Bush were potentially effective, if corny.
However now things appear to be going quite well in Iraq, with the new interim government actually forming quicker than expected, and earning a great deal of domestic Iraqi praise and support in the process. The Liberals always run on a platform of being committed to world peace, and peacekeeping in foreign nations. How will it look if they continue to angrily oppose one of the potentially most successful peacekeeping operations in recent history?
