There has been a lot in the news recently about Ahmed Chalabi, the Iraqi Governing Council member who has long been one of the most pushy pro-war allies of the Pentagon in the Iraq conflict. Chalabi appears to have fallen from grace recently however, with critics now accusing him of spreading diliberate disinformation to the Bush Administration, as well as running secret covert operations for Iran on the side.
Of all the allegations leveled against him, I think it’s a bit odd how he is always so quickly condemned as an “exile,” as if that explains everything. The main reason why he’s an exile to begin with is because Saddam killed all the Chalabi-types who stayed. If there was a flourishing array of local dissident political leaders then Saddam would have been running a pretty crappy dictatorship.
I read an excellent article defending Chalabi on Microsoft’s Slate magazine. I think it sums up the situation quite well. Read it here.
