As can be expected now that we’re in election-mode, Canada’s politicians have been ratcheting up the America-bashing. Yesterday PM Martin denounced Conservative leader Stephen Harper’s proposed tax cuts as “US-style”, to which Harper in turn blasted Martin for using “American-style” negative campaigning. Socialist leader Jack Layton similarly blasted both parties’ agendas claiming they would make “Canada more like the US.”
I’m not aware of any other nation on earth where political debate is almost entirely centered around proclaiming how you are NOT another country.
