Sonja Gandhi, the daughter-in-law of the late Indira Gandhi is poised to become India’s next Prime Minister following a massive upset victory for her Congress Party last week.
As is customary in Indian politics, Ms. Gandhi needed to form a multi-party coalition in order to govern. She chose to ally herself with India’s two Communist parties, which pledged to back her in parliament in exchange for some policy trade-offs.
India’s stock market plunged badly following the news. Investors tend to be suspicious of Communists for some reason.
