Monday was the Canadian version of the State of the Union, which we call the “Throne Speech.” During the Throne Speech, the Governor General of Canada sits on a big throne and reads a special speech that the Prime Minister writes for her.
Before he became Prime Minister, Paul Martin talked a lot about making Canada’s extremely high taxes “more fair” which most assumed meant he would bring in tax cuts of some sort. However, Mr. Martin is currently facing opposition from those who say he is not left-wing enough. So in this year’s throne speech, he ditched the tax cuts, and instead wrote heavily about the need for dramatic increases to funding of social programs.
