January 1st is the day Cubans celebrate the coup that brought Fidel Castro to power, as he overthrew the old dictator, Fulgencio Batista. This year is the 45th anniversary of the coup.
It’s not widely mentioned these days, but initially the United States welcomed the coup, as they had grown tired of Batista’s antics and were optimistic about Castro’s crew. Of course then Castro came out as a Communist, and well, things just went down hill from there.
