Senator Trent Lott has been nervously backpedalling since he made some offensive statements last Wednesday regarding fellow Senator Strom Thurmond.
Mr. Thurmond ran for President in 1948 on a staunch pro-segregation platform. On Wednesday, on Thurmond’s 100th birthday party, Lott commented that perhaps “we wouldn’t have all these problems” if Thurmond had been elected.
Lott maintains it was innocent praise, but others object to the racist overtones of the statement.
