After 30 years of service, North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms has announced he plans to retire before the next Senate election.
Helms was an ultra-conservative Republican, who bitterly opposed issues such as gun control, affirmative action, abortion, evolution, and the so-called homosexual agenda.
